Lilburn was once inhabited by a tribe of Native American Indians known as the Lower Creeds in the early 1800’s. These people lived here primarily for hunting. In 1819 land in and around Lilburn was auctioned off and soon the town began to develop. The first church was created in 1823, and is still used today. Although during the Civil War there were no major battles fought in the area, there was a military engagement fought at the Yellow River. The Union troops were in the area foraging supplies for Sherman’s troops when the Confederates put up resistance. This was the only Civil War activity in Lilburn.

The city of Lilburn is committed to keeping a serene and preserved environment, which is particularly evident in its many parks and nature preserves. These parks allow for residents to participate in a wide range of entertainment and recreational facilities. Residents of Lilburn enjoy walking along a mile-long trail on 24 wooded acres in Yellow River Game Ranch. Here one can encounter over six hundred types of birds, white-tailed deer, rabbits, buffalo, sheep, kid goats, and black bears indigenous to the state of Georgia. Some of these animals can be fed, admired, and pet in the ranch petting zoo. Picnic tables and playground areas make for a perfect leisurely day!
